Stromberg v. California

During the 1930’s McCarthyism had consumed America. Statutes and laws were passed throughout the nation to ensure security and expunge communist threat. In California, the B.A.F.’s (Better American Federation) goal was to clear the state of dangerous dissent. They would investigate any entity they found threatening.

During the summer of 1929 they pinpointed a Pioneer summer camp; the youth camp for working class children was operated by a number of different groups and organizations, some of which were either openly communist or had expressed approval towards communist beliefs, the camp was investigated and later searched. A red flag was found a long with books of communist uprising and weapons. Yetta Stromberg a 19-year-old counselor was also arrested.
