During World War II, America, Germany, and Russia began to invent new kinds of rockets that could carry huge amounts of explosives. These rockets were capable of destroying large areas; these rockets were part of the spark that ignited the Space Race. The Space race was a competition between the USSR and America that began in the 1950’s and ended in 1975. It showed the advance in technology and power of each of these countries. The purpose of the race was to see which country could invent new and better rockets that would orbit the earth, and land on the moon. In 1957, the Soviet Union amazed the world when they launched an artificial satellite named Sputnik to orbit the earth. This satellite was the size of a large beach ball and weighted only 80 kilograms. Sputnik had a radio that sent out signals that anyone could pick up around the world. Sputnik played a very important role in the Space Race because it motivated America to take the lead. In 1958, America created the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Acts), and landed on the moon on July 21st 1969. As a result, America took the lead of the Space Race. |
