The Department of Scientific Computing is pleased to announce that The Florida State University Board of Trustees has approved the implementation of a new B.S. degree in Computational Science, starting in the Fall 2010 semester.
The new degree program should be of interest to and is well suited for those who like working on computers and who ordinarily would also be interested in any of the mathematical sciences (mathematics, computer science, statistics), or the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, geological sciences, ...), or any engineering discipline. Thus, students in the new degree program will learn how to develop and apply new computational tools to solve science and engineering problems.
The newly established Department of Scientific Computing is the focal point of computational science activities at FSU. Computational science involves the invention, implementation, testing, and application of algorithms and software used to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems. The Department provides a venue for innovative research and education in scientific computing. Our faculty come from a wide variety of traditional mathematical and scientific disciplines whoare primarily interested in developing knowledge and tools for
computational science and applying those tools to the solution of problems in a variety of applications.
Please note that computational science is different from computer science. At the risk of oversimplifying things, one can say that computer science is about the science of computers whereas computational science is about the use of computers to solve science and engineering problems.
The new degree program, along with the already established Master's and
Ph.D. programs, trains students in computational science by providing
them with a mix of theory and practice, including substantial hands-on
experience in the deployment and use of algorithms for scientific
computing.
More information about the new degree program and a sample academic map
are found at
http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu
under "Computational Science." Information about the Department of
Scientific Computing is found at

I would very much appreciate it if you would alert your students about
our new degree program and encourage those that might be interested to
seek more information. Please address questions, or have your students
address questions, about the new degree program to
info@sc.fsu.edu
Over the spring, we will be holding open houses in our department at
which we will demonstrate what computational science is all about; we
would welcome you and/or your colleagues and especially your students to attend these events. If you know anyone who might be interested in
these, please have them contact us through the above email address so
that I can let them know when the open houses will take place.

All students--The
BRACE Scholarship Newsletter is on the school website. Not all scholarships
have to do with gpa, SAT or ACT scores. A lot of them are just based
on essays. If you need to, show them to your English teacher. Paper
copies for those not on the website are in the BRACE office.

Making
College Financial Planning Count Online provides students and families with an interactive overview of the college
funding process, including information about the FAFSA, the types of financial
aid available, and more. They will also have access to the electronic
College FundPath Worksheet, which allow them to customize their family's
college funding strategy. They can learn at their own pace, and they'll
also be able to save, update and print their personal plan any time they
like.
Seniors, there are minimum subscores on the SAT and ACT in order to get into college classes at a community college (versus pre-college classes) in Florida. Here is information on BC and Valencia:
| Broward College |
| SAT |
Math 490 |
Reading 440 |
|
| ACT |
Math 19 |
Reading 18 |
English 17 |
| Valencia |
| SAT |
Math 500 |
Reading 480 |

Up until now, Valencia had lower subscores than Broward College.
Think about retesting!
Ages
18-31 - If you are interested in being an Air Traffic Controller,
the Federal Aviation Assoc. is taking applications for air
traffic controller school. You only need a high school diploma
to apply, and credit is given for college on the exam. There
will be a lot of retirees this year, so there will be openings.
Note that choosing a site like Anchorage or Indianapolis
to train is a likely acceptance into the training program.

BRACE
PROCESS FOR COLLEGE VISITS |
| 1. Approximately
two weeks before a college visit, information regarding that visit
will be in the Daily Bulletin and PA Announcements for Students and
Teachers, and the Website for Parents. |
| 2. ONLY
Juniors and Seniors or students graduating in 2008-2009 will be allowed
to sign up for college visits in the BRACE office before or after
school, in-between classes, or during lunch. |
| 3. When
students sign up for presentations in the BRACE office, they will
receive a pass. There will be a return time on the pass. Teachers
may elect to collect the passes for their records. If a pass is lost,
another one will be reissued only if it is within the sign-up deadline.
If not, another pass will not be reissued. Mrs. DiAlberto will not
issue passes the day of the presentation |
4. It
is up to the Teacher's discretion whether an individual student is
allowed to attend a college visit. College visits are a privilege--not
a right. Therefore, the teacher has the last word. The student may
get the college materials given out at the visit from the BRACE office,
if he/she did not attend.

SAT facts:
Did You Know......
-You can retake the SAT tests as many times as you would like to improve your scores.
-If you test mroe than once, the highest score from each of the reading, math and writing sections are added together to compile your total score. Therefore, students should take the SAT as many times as they need to.
-Colleges do not average SAT test scores, even if you test more than three times.
