FIELD TRIPS

Students are to abide by the rules and regulations of Cypress Bay High School and the Student Conduct and Discipline code while attending field trips and extracurricular activities. A student may not participate in a field trip until the proper paperwork procedures have been met and approval has been given. THE PRINCIPAL OR DESIGNEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DENY STUDENT PARTICIPATION in a school sponsored field trip. Also, a student may or may not attend a class-sponsored function designated for that class unless he/she is a member of that class. In order to participate in an athletic event or extracurricular activity, students must be in attendance for the entire day of the activity. Any request for a waiver of this policy must be approved by the administrator in charge of activities in advance of participation.

REPORTING ABSENCES

School Board policy states that parents MUST report absences and tardies. In the case of shared time students, such as students enrolled at Sheridan Technical Center, absences must be reported to both schools. Schools have a legal right to ask for written medical excuse when it seems warranted and will do so after four (4) absences in a grading period. DOCTORS' NOTES MUST BE PRESENTED WITHIN TWO (2) DAYS OF THE ABSENCE. In order for an absence to be excused, the parents must call the day before, the day of, or the day after the absence. NO ABSENCES OR TARDIES WILL BE EXCUSED AFTER 48 HOURS. Students should check on virtual counselor to ensure that an absence has been excused, or call (754)323-0352 with their first period teacher to be sure the absence is excused.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

All absences which have not been specifically identified as excused are considered unexcused absences. A zero grade is given for any test missed due to an unexcused absence. This work may not be made up. Four un-excused tardies in a marking period equal one unexcused absence and will result in 2.2% off the final grade.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

All students are expected to make up class work missed during an excused absence. The student has two days to make up the work for each day absent, not including the day of return. However, previously assigned work is due the day of return. Tests and assignments announced prior to an absence are due the day of return to school. It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to ask for assigned work to be made up. ALL ABSENCES MUST BE CLEARED WITHIN TWO (2) DAYS OR WILL REMAIN UNEXCUSED.

TARDINESS

Students are expected to be in their seats before the tardy bell rings for each class. Tardiness to class is handled by the classroom teacher. After 4 excused or unexcused tardies student will be referred to administration for review and appropriate disciplinary action. ALL TARDIES TO SCHOOL ARE CONSIDERED UNEXCUSED UNLESS A PARENT HAS CONTACTED THE SCHOOL BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

SIGN-OUT PROCEDURES

Once students arrive on school grounds, they are not permitted to leave campus without signing out through the attendance office. Cypress Bay High School has established the following procedures for early release to ensure the safety of all students:

  • If it is necessary for students to leave school grounds for any reason, a parent or authorized adult that appears on the Emergency Contact Card must personally appear in the office to sign out the student. For appointments, parents may personally prearrange the sign-out of a student in advance.
  • In the case of an emergency, ONLY a parent or legal guardian may request early dismissal of a student via facsimile. The facsimile request must include a copy of the parent/guardian’s driver’s license, the student’s name, and the date and time of dismissal. Handwritten notes will NOT be accepted from students as per Broward School Board policy.
  • Broward School Board Policy does not allow schools to dismiss students within the final 30 minutes of the school day.

Any cases that are deemed excessive will be submitted for review to Administration. Consequences of excessive tardies and/or early dismissals may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to administrative referral, attendance contract, referral to social worker, loss of extracurricular privileges, and/or temporary or permanent revocation of parking privileges.
